Protest ongoing in downtown Brussels, Belgium, Nov. 21. Increased security, localized disruptions reported.
Event
A large protest denouncing COVID-19 restrictions is prompting significant disruptions in downtown Brussels Nov. 21. Police employed tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters blocking some major thoroughfares earlier in the day. Protesters have since spread throughout central parts of the city. Police have closed numerous roads to facilitate the gathering of approximately 35,000 people, including Rue de la Loi, the R20 ring road, and the inbound lanes of the Leopold II and Cinquantenaire tunnels. Significant disruptions have also been reported throughout the European Quarter.
Residual disruptions are likely after the gathering concludes. Further clashes between police and protesters are possible if protesters become unruly.
