Sporadic protests possible in Dominican Republic's Cibao region through at least mid-November. Avoid all demonstrations.

Informational

Event

Activists associated with the Coalition of Popular Social and Feminist Organizations of the Cibao (Coalicion de Organizaciones Sociales Populares y Feministas del Cibao) plan to stage a series of demonstrations across the Cibao region into at least mid-November. The purpose of the action is to protest the government's policies on a number of social issues and to push for the reversal of the administration's recent cancellation of electricity subsidies.

While organizers have stated their intent to stage a number of gatherings through the week of Nov. 8, as yet they have only announced specific plans for demonstrations on Nov. 10 in southern parts of Espaillat province, as well as in the municipalities of Licey al Medio, Canca La Reyna, Monte de la Jagua, and San Victor. Rallies are also planned in Santiago on Nov. 14 and San Francisco de Macoris on Nov. 15.

Coalition representatives have given no timeline for how long they plan to continue their campaign of protests. Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security to monitor any gatherings that may materialize; localized transport and business disruptions are likely. While the potential for violence will be low, isolated confrontations with police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations where possible. Adhere to all directives issued by security force personnel. Monitor local media to remain apprised of any updates regarding potential protests, particularly for the week beginning Nov. 8.
