Water management-related protests in central Iran are likely to persist through November. Avoid all protests.

Warning

Event

Further protests are possible in central Iran through November in response to water management concerns, particularly water shortages. Hundreds of people gathered in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, including in Shahrekord, Nov. 21. Large scale gatherings were also reported in Esfahan, Nov. 19, to protest against the diversion of water resources. Demonstrators gathered in the dry Zayandeh Rood riverbed. No major acts of violence were reported.

Heightened security is likely at any further demonstration. Gatherings are likely in Esfahan and Shahrekord and are possible in other towns in the region. Ground travel delays are likely near all protest sites. Clashes are possible between protesters and the security forces if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Plan for ground travel delays near protest sites.
