Further disruptive protests denouncing measures imposed to combat the spread of COVID-19 are likely nationwide in the coming days. A gathering in The Hague late Nov. 20 turned violent when protesters pelted stones at security officers. Reports indicate that disruptive protests also took place in Bunschoten, Roermond, Stein, and Urk among others. A protest in Rotterdam late Nov. 19 devolved into a riot; police opened fire at demonstrators, injuring at least seven people.
Increased security and transport disruptions are likely near any further protests. Isolated clashes between police and protesters are likely, particularly if activists attempt to breach security cordons. Violent incidents, including looting and vandalism, cannot be ruled out.
