Unidentified armed men attacked a large convoy of local self-defense forces in Adabda, Tillabery Region, Niger, Nov. 2. At least three dozen people are still missing following the raid. Reports indicate the convoy was seeking to locate militants prior to the ambush. Exact casualty figures are unclear at this time. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault.

A heightened security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further clashes between local security forces and militants are possible.

Context

The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of armed attacks present across much of Niger. Islamist militants affiliated with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State continue to operate in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) and perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects.
