Sri Lanka: Teachers to stage protests nationwide Nov. 9

Teachers to hold rallies across Sri Lanka Nov. 9. Tight security likey; localized transport disruptions possible at action sites.

Warning

Event

Teachers under the Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) plan to stage protests outside ministry of education offices nationwide Nov. 9. The purpose of the action is to demand the government improve their working conditions. The largest demonstrations will likely occur in Colombo and other urban centers, like Kandy and Negombo. Additional possible protest sites include other government buildings, as well as prominent roadways and monuments. Dozens to hundreds of people may participate in any demonstration.

Authorities will likely impose heightened security measures, such as deploying additional personnel, at any protest sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, particularly if violence occurs. Clashes may break out if police disperse or move crowds forcibly; police have used tear gas and water cannon in previous demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations Nov. 9 as a precaution. Seek updated information on rally plans from trusted local sources, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Leave the area immediately if violence breaks out, and seek shelter at a secure non-government location. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
