Cambodia: Further resort workers protests likely in Phnom Penh through early January /update 1

Further resort workers protests likely in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, through early January. Tight security likely, disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Further demonstrations by employees of the NagaWorld Integrated Resort are likely in Phnom Penh through early January. Resort workers have held daily demonstrations and strikes since Dec. 18 near the resort complex and National Assembly. Dozens to hundreds of people could participate in related gatherings in the coming days.

Authorities will almost certainly bolster security at the resort and surrounding areas during any protest, including erecting security cordons and roadblocks. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, especially if there is a high turnout or if the demonstrators occupy nearby streets. While the demonstrations will likely pass off peacefully, clashes between protesters and police are possible if demonstrators ignore official orders to disperse. Localized ground travel delays are likely. If security forces consider any rally to violate public gathering permit requirements, mass arrests may occur.

Advice

Avoid any protest due to possible clashes. Plan for possible transport and business disruptions near gatherings and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on additional gatherings as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
