Authorities confirmed that there were no casualties in the detonation of an explosive device at approximately 03:00 Dec. 27 in central Santiago. The device was left outside the headquarters of the Gendarmerie, located on Calle Rosas near its intersection with Calle Teatinos; the building suffered minor damages in the attack. Localized transport disruptions are possible throughout Dec. 27 as police investigate the scene.

Context

Attacks using explosive devices are sometimes carried out by small leftist and anarchist groups in Chile. The Gendarmerie administers prisons, and the attack may have been carried out by an organization opposed to the imprisonment of protesters detained in the political unrest that occurred in 2019 or of radical Mapuche activists who are accused of arson attacks in southern Chile.
