Colombia: Further protests likely in Cali after disruptive gathering, Dec. 9

Sit-in protest reported near Comfandi del Prado shopping center in Cali, Colombia Dec. 9; further protests likely in coming days.

Informational

Event

Further protests are likely in Cali by Emcali workers in the coming days following disruptive protests Dec. 9 and 8. Protesters blocked roads near the Comfandi del Prado shopping center before being dispersed by police, Dec. 9. They had also gathered near the mayor's office, Dec. 8. Workers represented by the Sintraemcali union are opposed to draft Agreement 130. The proposed policy aims to create a private company to focus on various municipal functions; workers allege this will be detrimental to Emcali, a state-owned company.

Likely gathering areas of further protests include major road routes and government offices, including the mayor’s office. Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor and disperse gatherings.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence breaks out, immediately seek shelter in a non-governmental building.
