Informational

Event

Transport drivers are continuing their indefinite strike in Rionegro Municipality, Antioquia Department, for a fourth day, Dec. 9. Drivers are striking in response to the implementation of a new transportation system, Sitirio. Disruptions have been widely reported. Media reports have cited delays and long queues at Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (MDE). It is not clear if the disruptions at MDE are due to transport drivers blocking roads, transport unavailability, or a combination of both. Striking workers have also blocked Calle 47 on occasion. The route leads from MDE and runs through central Rionegro. It is not clear when the strike will end.

Strike-related disruptions are likely to persist for the duration of the labor action and will increase demand for available alternative means of transport. Striking workers are likely to continue to protest. Gathering points include government buildings, major road routes, and public squares. Security forces are likely to deploy to monitor any protests that occur. Clashes are possible if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all protests and do not drive through protester roadblocks until officials have cleared them. Reconfirm all transport arrangements before departure. Prepare for lengthy delays if traveling by road. Heed the instructions of local officials.
