Authorities in Fiji have not immediately reported any damage or casualties after a magnitude-6.3 offshore earthquake occurred northwest of Vanua Levu at around 04:28 FJT Dec. 20. The US Tsunami Warning System did not issue a tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat in connection with the temblor.

The epicenter was about 85 km (53 miles) west of Labasa, Fiji. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in parts of Fiji. Significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
