Iran: Additional protests likely in Esfahan through end December
Additional protests likely in Esfahan, Iran, through end December. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
Additional protests are likely in Esfahan through at least end December following violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators denouncing water shortages. Police used teargas to disperse thousands of protesters who had gathered in the dry Zayandeh riverbed Nov. 26 and reportedly arrested more than 200 people. The protests first started in early November when farmers demanded that authorities increase the water flow in the Zayandeh River, claiming that the diversion of water resources had negatively impacted their crops.
Likely gathering sites include near Khajoo Bridge, public squares, and government buildings. Localized ground transport and business disruptions are likely near protest sites. Security forces will almost certainly continue to monitor and respond to all gatherings. Further clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence. Allow additional travel time if operating near demonstration venues and affected areas. Monitor local media for protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstrations. Follow all police instructions.
