Poland: Nationwide demonstrations, Dec. 19, in response to controversial new media law

Activists plan to protest nationwide in Poland, Dec. 19, in opposition to a new media law. Large gathering in Warsaw from 19:00.

Activists, including those aligned with the Committee for the Defense of Democracy, plan to protest nationwide, Dec. 19, in support of media freedom and in opposition to a newly passed media law that limits the issuance of broadcasting licenses to companies that are majority-owned by EU groups. Parliament has approved the law; however, it is yet to be ratified by the president. The largest demonstration is likely near the Presidential Palace in Warsaw from 19:00. Other major events are included below:

  • Gdansk: At the statue of King Jan III Sobieski from 19:00

  • Krakow: Town Hall from 15:00

  • Lodz: 143 Piotrkowska Street from 19:00

  • Poznan: Adam Mickiewicz Square from 19:00

  • Wroclaw: Wolności Square from 20:00

Protests are also scheduled in dozens of other towns and cities. Heightened security is likely near all related events. Police may disperse protesters if they ignore orders to disperse or if they are overly disruptive. Localized ground travel delays are likely near all protest venues.
