Serbia: Environmental activists call for nationwide protests Dec. 11

Environmental protests call for protests across Serbia Dec. 11; Localized disruptions likely, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Environmental activists have called for protests and road blockades in urban centers nationwide from 14:00 Dec. 11 to denounce land expropriation laws in connection with lithium mining. Similar demonstrations in recent weeks have caused significant traffic delays in the affected areas. Although specific actions are currently unconfirmed, precedent suggests large related gatherings will likely take place near Belgrade’s Gazela Bridge, Novi Sad's Varadin Bridge, as well as in Kragujevac and other major cities on the day. Participants could attempt to blockade major roads or march through city centers. Attendance at demonstrations could reach the low to mid-thousands.

A heavy police presence is highly likely around any related gatherings. Large crowds and associated security measures are likely to prompt localized disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures in Serbia severely restrict public gatherings. Police could disperse participants deemed to be breaching COVID-19 restrictions. Additionally, the police could clash with protesters who attempt to blockade major roads or march in undesignated areas. Any violence would pose an incidental threat to bystanders.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Monitor local media for updates on protests. If violence erupts, leave the area immediately. Check traffic conditions and allow extra time for travel in downtown areas of Belgrade and other major cities the afternoon of Dec. 11.
