Sudan: Activists schedule protest in Omdurman Dec. 23

Activists schedule protest in Omdurman, Sudan, from 13:00, Dec. 23. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Women activists and opposition groups have called for a protest in Omdurman Dec. 23. Participants are expected to gather at 13.00 at al-Arbaeen Street and will proceed to al-Tijani al-Mahi Street. The action is to denounce alleged sexual violence by security forces during an anti-coup protest Dec. 19. Protests are possible in other urban centers across the country, including Khartoum. Protesters are likely to gather near major government buildings and along road routes.

Heightened security measures are almost certain along key thoroughfares and near government buildings during the protest. Security forces will likely close bridges in the Khartoum area to prevent protesters from gathering; protesters are also likely to block roads. Disruptions to urban and intercity road travel and business operations are likely amid the protest. Clashes regularly break out between protesters and security forces during such demonstrations, with security forces often attempting to forcibly disperse demonstrators.

Advice

Consider deferring travel to Sudan until the current situation stabilizes. Avoid all protests due to the threat of violence. Individuals in-country should limit movement on days with scheduled protests and avoid large public gatherings and security personnel concentrations. Regularly review and update contingency plans with trusted contacts. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
