Unionized workers to strike nationwide and protest in urban centers across Colombia Jan. 28. Heightened security, travel disruptions likely.

Several workers' groups and unions will protest nationwide over a variety of social issues Jan. 28. The following events are planned:

  • Bogota: Events possible citywide, particularly at Portal Americas, Ara de Suba, and Marichuela in Usme.

  • Bucaramanga: Protesters to gather at the Universidad Industrial de Santander 14:00. Taxi drivers also plan to near the Palonegro International Airport at an undisclosed time.

  • Buga: Protesters to gather at the Balboa Biohealthy Park 09:00 and march to the Seine Bridge.

  • Cali: Protesters gathering at the Glorieta Siloe 09:00. The march route has not been announced.

  • Manizales: Protesters to gather at Torre del Cable 15:00.

  • Medellin: Protesters to gather at the Tricentenario Metro station 13:00. The march route has not been announced.

  • Pereira: Protesters to gather at the Traveler Station 16:00.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor all large gatherings. Transport and business disruptions are likely along protest routes. There is an elevated threat of violence at demonstrations, especially if security forces seek to disperse protesters. Similar previous demonstrations have ended in acts of vandalism and clashes with security forces.

Avoid all protests. Do not attempt to cross any protest blockades. Monitor local media for updates on the status of roads as protest locations may not be announced in advance. Depart the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Plan accordingly for potential disruptions to ground travel, especially in departmental capital cities.
