Honduras: Heightened security likely in Tegucigalpa during Jan. 27 presidential inauguration
Elevated security and travel disruptions likely in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for presidential inauguration Jan. 27.
Event
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in Tegucigalpa Jan. 27 during Honduras' presidential inauguration; Xiomara Castro will be sworn for her first term after winning the nation's Nov. 28 elections. The ceremony will occur at the Tiburcio Carias Andino National Stadium, though the exact time has as yet not been announced; several high-ranking foreign dignitaries will be in attendance. Related events will also take place at other locations throughout the city. Severe traffic and other movement disruptions are likely in the capital, with authorities planning to close a number of major thoroughfares in the city from 06:00; however, police may set up some security cordons as early as 01:00.
Although no group has announced specific plans to do so, protests by anti-Castro groups could occur near inauguration event venues.
Security personnel will likely set up roadblocks and perform identity checks around sensitive sites in Tegucigalpa, including hotels where foreign delegations are staying. Authorities could also increase security measures near government buildings and foreign embassies. Police may also close additional roads temporarily with little to no warning in order to prioritize official motorcade movements.
Advice
Exercise increased caution if operating in Tegucigalpa Jan. 27. Avoid inauguration-related events to minimize potential disruptions; keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed all instructions from local authorities and allow additional time to reach destinations near locations where demonstrations or other gatherings may take place.
