Thousands of have people have gathered in central Amsterdam the afternoon of Jan. 2 to protest ongoing COVID-19 measures in the Netherlands. Authorities had prohibited the demonstration due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and its variants. Despite the ban, protesters gathered in Museumplein around 12:00.
Given that the activists have gathered in defiance of the authorities, clashes cannot be ruled, particularly, if the demonstrators are overly disruptive. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face a significant incidental threat in the vicinity. Increased security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely for the duration of the protests.
