Romania: Unionized public transport workers striking in Bucharest, Jan. 21

Unionized public transport workers striking in Bucharest, Romania, Jan. 21; significant transport disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

Unionized employees of the Bucharest Transit Corporation (STB) are currently striking to demand better pay and working conditions in addition to the resignation of the STB general manager. It is not clear for how long the strike will continue. Related demonstrations are possible outside government offices or transport hubs.

The strike has resulted in the cancelation of almost all bus, trolleybus, and tram services in the city. Increased road traffic congestion and crowding on subway services have been reported as commuters seek alternative routes. The strike may also lead to reduced taxi availability. Any demonstrations are likely to pass off peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm all public transport schedules in Bucharest before beginning journeys. Allow extra time for travel and make alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions.
