Event
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued potential tsunami threat advisories for Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru evening Jan. 15, following the volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga. Reports indicate that a minor tsunami caused flooding in coastal areas of Peru, including Pisco. Authorities in Chile have placed several regions in 'State of Caution' and advised people not to approach the coastline. A 'State of Alert' also remains in place for Arica y Parinacota, Atacama, and Coquimbo regions.
Officials could modify or rescind advisories in the coming hours. Evacuations, business and transport disruptions are likely as the situation evolves.
Advice
Move away from the immediate coastline; the event can be long-duration, and the threat may persist for hours. Heed the directives of the local authorities.
