Sudan: Activists plan civil disobedience nationwide Jan. 18-19

Activists plan protests, strike action across Sudan, Jan. 18-19. Increased security, disruptions likely; violence possible.

Warning

Event

Opposition activists have called for a general strike and related demonstrations Jan. 18-19. The purpose of the action is to protest the deaths of at least seven protesters in clashes with security forces Jan. 17 in Khartoum. While the precise times and locations for the protests have not been announced, gatherings are highly likely on major thoroughfares and near government buildings, including the Presidential Palace in Khartoum. Protests in other major cities, including Omdurman and Port Sudan, are also likely.

During protest periods, security forces will almost certainly heighten security along key thoroughfares and near government buildings. Bridges, particularly those in the Khartoum area, will likely be closed to prevent protesters from gathering. Protesters may erect roadblocks and clash with the security forces. Unrest and work stoppages could also disrupt business operations. Public transport will also probably be impacted. Disruptions to urban and intercity road travel, airports, border crossings, business operations, and telecommunications are probable amid significant bouts of civil unrest or authorities' security-related operations.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of additional violence. Exercise caution near potential demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, non-governmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow police instructions. Anticipate possible disruption.
