Further protests and heightened security measures are likely nationwide, including in Khartoum and neighboring Omdurman, until at least mid-January, after Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdock resigned from office Jan. 2. Hamdok’s resignation came amid a recurrent crackdown on protesters denouncing the Oct. 25 military coup as well as the deal that reinstated him in November. Two people were killed by the security forces during related protests in Khartoum and Omdurman Jan. 2. The security forces reportedly fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters. Disruptions to internet and phone services were also reported; as of Jan 3, services have been restored.

Activists have called for additional protests on Jan. 4 to denounce the recent killings of protesters and the current political impasse. The exact time and locations for the events remain unclear as of Jan. 3, however, protesters are likely to gather in major urban centers including Khartoum and Omdurman, notably near government buildings. Heightened security is likely across Khartoum over the coming days. Officials may again cut telecommunication services ahead of the protest. Transport and business disruptions are possible in the vicinity of the protests.
