A magnitude-6.2 offshore earthquake occurred in the South Pacific Ocean between Tonga and Fiji at around 19:40 TOT Jan. 27. The epicenter was about 219 km (136 miles) west-northwest of Pangai, Tonga. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 15 km (9 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout most of Tonga and far eastern Fiji. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely.
