Cyberattack prompts disruptions to multiple government websites in Ukraine Jan. 14; appointment cancellations and reduced services likely.

Informational

Event

A significant cyberattack overnight Jan. 13-14 has rendered multiple government websites inaccessible on Jan. 14. The websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Treasury, the State Emergency Service, the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the Ministry of Veteran Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection are affected.

Work is underway to restore online systems and investigate the source of the attack. Officials have not confirmed when they expect IT services to resume.

Context

The cyberattack comes amid elevated military tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Over 100,000 Russian troops are currently deployed in regions bordering Ukraine, and there are concerns that the troop movements are either a prelude to major conflict or a high-stakes effort to raise tensions to extract concessions from Kyiv or Ukraine's Western allies. Nonetheless, the perpetrators of the Jan. 13-14 cyberattack remain unknown.

Advice

Confirm all appointments with all government departments in Ukraine through Jan. 14; anticipate possible delays and cancellations of public service appointments.
