Guinea-Bissau: Situation remains tense in Bissau, Feb. 1, amid possible coup attempt /update 1
Possible coup attempt taking place in Guinea-Bissau, Feb. 1. Shelter in place until the situation stabilizes.
Event
The situation remains tense in Guinea-Bissau as of the evening of Feb. 1 in the wake of an incident that both the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have described as an attempted coup. Explosions and automatic weapons fire were reported near the Government Palace in Bissau starting at about 15:00 as President Umaro Sissaco Embalo was chairing a meeting of the Council of Ministers. While the exact situation as yet remains unclear, military forces have reportedly deployed to several locations within the nation's capital, establishing a security perimeter around the Palace of Government and stationing troops near the Palace of Justice. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the military may have entered the National TV building. The current whereabouts of President Embalo and Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam remain unclear. The Embassy of Portugal has issued a security warning advising all Portuguese nationals in the country to remain in their homes and await further information due to the current security situation.
Extremely tight security is almost certain in Bissau in the coming hours. Authorities will almost certainly implement movement restrictions, potentially including curfews, and could restrict telecommunications. Severe transport disruptions are likely until the situation stabilizes; armed clashes could also erupt with little to no warning.
Advice
Persons in Guinea-Bissau should shelter in place, maintain close contact with their diplomatic representations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities, including possible curfew-related restrictions. Avoid government buildings, security installations, large concentrations of police and soldiers, and any demonstrations that may materialize. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Reconfirm transport services, including flight reservations, before leaving accommodations.
