Poland: Adverse weather forecast across the country through at least Feb. 19
Storms to bring strong winds across Poland through at least Feb. 19. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Event
Succressive storm systsems will bring strong winds across Poland through at least Feb. 19. Storm Dudley will move from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea Feb. 16-17, before moving eastwards over the Bay of Riga. Wind gusts of over 100 kph (62 mph) are possible in coastal regions and will lead to rough seas. The storms will be accomapnied by heavy rainfall, mainly in northern regions, and snow is possible in the Tartra mountains. A second storm system will bring further strong winds Feb. 18-19.
As of Feb. 16, the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW-PIB) has issued the following wind warnings across Poland:
Red strong wind warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale): western Poland.
Orange strong wind warnings: central Poland.
Yellow strong wind warnings: eastern Poland.
Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
The strong winds could lead to downed power lines and consequent power outages, as well as damage from flying debris. Strong wind gusts could lead to rough seas conditions in coastal areas and difficult overland travel conditions.
Transport
The severe weather will likely cause ground transport disruptions in parts of the affected region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are likely on secondary and rural roadways in affected areas as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become hazardous. Gusty winds may topple high-profile vehicles in some affected areas. Hazardous weather conditions might also cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports over the coming hours and days. Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations along the northern coast if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, impacting freight and passenger maritime traffic.
Advice
Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through affected areas. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
