US: Heightened security to remain in place in Washington D.C. through March 7 due to planned protests against COVID-19 restrictions /update 1

Heightened security to remain in place in Washington D.C., US, through at least March 7 due to planned protests.

Informational

Event

Authorities will maintain tightened security across Washington, D.C through at least early March as a precaution due to planned protests that could cause significant traffic and business disruptions. Activists opposing COVID-19-related restrictions will stage demonstrations in the city during the first week of the month. Dubbed the "People's Convoy," the action is inspired by the recent truckers' protests in Canada. Some of the groups participating in the protest have left from California and Texas and are en route to Washington, DC; however, organizers estimate the main body of participants will arrive in the nation's capital March 5-6. Participants do not plan on blocking roads around government buildings.

At least 700 members of the National Guard have been deployed throughout the Washington D.C. area and will remain until at least March 7. Security measures will include a temporary fence constructed around part of the US Capitol building, where US President Joseph Biden will deliver the State of the Union speech on March 1. If further protests materialize or reports of demonstrations are confirmed, authorities could increase security near other government buildings, key monuments, and major traffic arteries.

Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially near government buildings in central Washington, D.C. Major disruptions or clashes are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in Washington D.C. through early march, particularly if protests materialize. Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution; exit the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation or other security disturbance. Confirm appointments at government offices before departing. Allow additional time to reach destinations near any likely protest sites.
