Event

A magnitude-5.8 earthquake occurred in Hormozgan province, southern Iran, at 02:45 March 17. The epicenter was about 57 km (35 miles) north-northwest of Bandar-e Lengeh. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Strong shaking was probably felt in areas of southern Iran near the epicenter, with light to moderate tremors being reported in northern Oman and parts of the United Arab Emirates. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate-to-strong aftershocks are likely over the coming days. A magnitude-4.5 aftershock was recorded 02:57 March 17.

The earthquake did not result in any casualties but two people reported minor injuries. 11 villages reported power outages in Hormozgan Province, of which power has been restored to 10 villages. Several buildings have been damaged in the province.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
