Panama: Further protests possible on the Pan-American highway into mid-March

Protests on Pan-American highway, Panama, possible into mid-March; clashes reported near Ipeti.

Warning

Event

Protests along segments of the Pan-American highway in Panama entered their second day on March 11 with activists completely blocking traffic in some areas; such gatherings could continue into at least mid-March. The purpose of the action is to demand improvements to the highway's infrastructure, among other things. Demonstrators have been protesting on the highway in several areas between Chepo in Panama Province and Agua Fria in Darien Province. Clashes between the police and protesters were reported in Ipeti early March 11 and the highway is completely blocked around Torti.

Demonstrations will probably continue in the coming days if protesters do not reach an agreement with the authorities. Heightened security and transport disruptions along the Pan-American highway are likely for the duration of the protests. Further clashes are possible, especially if police move to disperse the protesters.

Advice

Avoid protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow extra time for travel in the vicinity of demonstrations.
