Although Litro Gas has reportedly resumed the domestic supply of gas, domestic shortages and price increases are continuing. Additional protests are likely in the coming days. Previous related protests have involved dozens to hundreds of people.

Authorities may also tighten security near possible protest locations, including government buildings and public squares. Gatherings are likely in Colombo; protesters often demonstrate in the Fort area. Police may try to disperse protests, including using water cannons and tear gas. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Business disruptions are possible, especially if violence breaks out.
Context
The economic situation in Sri Lanka has been deteriorating, notably due to rising debt and decreasing foreign exchange reserves. The lower foreign reserves have made it difficult for the government to import more gas. Shortages of food and medicine have also been reported. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party held a protest in Colombo March 15 calling for the government to resign. Demonstrations denouncing the shortages and calling for the government to step down are likely in at least the near term.
