Warning

Event

Ukrainian officials in Enerhodar have reported a fire at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) early March 4 following strikes by Russian forces. According to authorities, shelling caused a fire at the first block of the plant. Unconfirmed reports suggest that firefighting efforts are underway. The extent of the damage from the fire and ongoing clashes is unclear; however, a spokesperson from the power plant said that there is currently no threat of radiation spreading. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also released a statement saying they are aware of the reported shelling and are in contact with Ukrainian authorities.

Clashes are likely to continue near the power plant over the coming hours. Firefighters will likely continue to attempt to access the site to put out the fire and investigate damages to the facility. Electricity and telecommunication disruptions are also possible if the plant is shutdown.

Energodar is 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Zaporizhzhia.
