Warning

Event

Clashes between Dhaka College students and traders are ongoing in the New Market area as of April 20. Several small explosions have been reported in the vicinity of nearby Dhaka College. No casualties have been reported. Police have deployed to the area and have closed roadways in the area.

Additional protests are likely in the coming days. Authorities will likely maintain security measures in the area and will likely use force to break up violent crowds. Students and traders may hold protests demanding action regarding the violence. Further clashes between students and traders as well as between police and crowds are possible. Security measures and additional violence will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Traffic disruptions are especially likely near Nilkhet intersection and Dhaka College. Clashes may result in localized business disruptions.

Context

The clashes follow earlier violence that broke out late April 18, when Dhaka College students attacked shops at the New Market; the students claim traders assaulted a fellow student. Students have demanded that authorities take legal action against the traders and are threatening to hold additional protests if shops in the New Market reopen before their demands are met.

Advice

Avoid the New Market area, as well as any related protests, due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure building. Plan for possible localized disruptions and allow for additional travel time near crowds. Heed all instructions from security personnel.
