Bangladesh: Hindus to observe annual Durga Puja festival Oct. 9-13
Bangladesh to observe annual Hindu festival of Durga Puja Oct. 9-13. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.
Hindus across Bangladesh will observe the annual Durga Puja festival Oct. 9-13. Durga Puja is the largest religious festival for the Hindu minority in Bangladesh and features large gatherings and fairs at temples, along with installations of Goddess Durga's idols. The festivities conclude with the immersion of these idols in nearby water bodies, often accompanied by massive processions. Authorities have declared Oct. 13 a public holiday; government offices and most businesses will remain closed that day. While celebrated across the country, the largest Durga Puja gatherings will occur in Barisal, Dhaka, Khulna, and Mymensingh divisions.
Authorities have already increased security in certain cities ahead of the observance, especially in Dhaka. Isolated communal violence is possible, particularly in the form of arson, clashes, theft, and vandalism, typically near public religious sites. Authorities have not disclosed any specific threats to the upcoming holiday, but militant attacks by radical Islamic groups remain possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near larger religious congregations and events. Business disruptions are probable as retailers close and/or curtail their hours of operation on Oct. 13.
Exercise caution near festival venues, places of worship, and other crowded event sites. If violence breaks out, depart immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm all business and travel appointments, especially on Oct. 13. Exercise increased situational awareness due to the potential for increased levels of petty crime during the festival period. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
