Bangladesh: Increased security, demonstrations, related disruptions likely nationwide Nov. 21 during annual Armed Forces Day
Tight security, rallies, related disruptions likely in Bangladesh Nov. 21 in connection with annual Armed Forces Day. Exercise caution.
Increased security, protests, and related disruptions are likely in Bangladesh on Nov. 21 during the annual Armed Forces Day celebration. As of Nov. 18, officials have announced that roads connecting to the Dhaka Cantonment will be restricted 07:00–11:00 and again from 12:00–19:00. Similar vehicular and other restrictions are likely in other cantonment areas, such as Cumilla, Chattogram, Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.
Although there have been no immediate announcements for such gatherings, related demonstrations will likely occur sporadically across Bangladesh. In recent months, the frequency of rallies has increased since the ousting of long-term former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and in protest against alleged violence associated with extrajudicial killings by security personnel.
Potential rally sites include cantonment areas, government buildings, military installations, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will likely vary by location and sponsoring entity, with student organizations and political groups likely to attract thousands of participants.
Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence near government buildings, cantonment regions, and other locations. Depending on operational needs, officials may implement enhanced restrictions. Clashes between activists, police, and members of opposing groups are possible. Isolated security incidents, including arson and vandalism, cannot be ruled out. Associated localized business and transport disruptions are highly likely.
Exercise increased caution if operating in Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka, on Nov. 21. To the extent possible, minimize exposure to government buildings, military installations, and other security-sensitive locations. Do not photograph the movement of security personnel. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized business and transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
