Colombia: Flights suspended at La Nubia airport in Manizales due to ashfall from Nevado del Ruiz Volcano April 1

Ashfall from Nevado del Ruiz Volcano reported in Manizales, Colombia, April 1; flights suspended at La Nubia Airport.

Informational

Event

La Nubia Airport (MZL) in Manizales, Caldas Department, has suspended operations April 1 due to ashfall from the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano, located approximately 140 km (87 miles) northwest of Bogota. The volcano produced an ash plume 6,100 meters (20,013 feet) high following an eruptive event early April 1. Volcanic material was reported to have been emitted in a northwesterly direction extending 28 km (17 miles) from the summit.

Transport
Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace; authorities might temporarily close MZL or other nearby airports if significant ashfall accumulations occur.

Context

Nevado del Ruiz is in a continually eruptive state and the recent event does not appear to indicate a particular increase in volcanic activity. The Colombian Geological Survey maintains a yellow level warning (the second-highest on a four-tier scale) for the volcano. Closures at MZL are a relatively regular occurrence due to ashfall. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area.

Advice

Reconfirm flights. Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano in the coming days. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving; due to reduced visibility, drive cautiously in areas affected by ash. Carry masks or face coverings and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area. Volcanic ash and gases can cause eye irritation and respiratory problems. Do not rub irritated eyes; flush them with water. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.
