Informational

Event

Civil society groups have announced that they will extend a previously declared April 25 strike across the El Cibao region to include labor actions April 26. Additionally, activists based in San Francisco de Macoris have announced that they are planning to stage a related demonstration in their city April 24 ahead of the work stoppage. The purpose of the strike is to denounce the government's economic policies and demand that authorities construct public works and protect the environment.

Related gatherings are likely to result in transport and business disruptions in multiple areas, including the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the economic center of the region. While any demonstrations are likely to be largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence near rally sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid any strike-related demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent protest-related disruptions. Do not attempt to drive through any protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential demonstration sites. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
