The device was discovered near the intersection of Eisenbahnstrasse and Platanenstrasse during construction work on the railway track. Authorities will evacuate individuals within a 250-meter (820-foot) radius and no individuals or traffic are permitted within a 500-meter (1,640-foot) radius.

Authorities will close several roads within the larger security cordon. Rail services operating through Rheydt Central Station are suspended for the duration of the disposal operation, impacting services RE4, RE8, RB27, RB33, and RB34.
