Guatemala: CODECA calls for nationwide demonstrations April 25-26
CODECA calls for protests across Guatemala April 25-26. Roadblocks are likely in many areas. Avoid all protests.
Event
The Farmer Development Committee (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) has called for nationwide protests April 25-26 to denounce government corruption and raise socioeconomic concerns, including the rising prices of fuel. CODECA plans to protest on roadways across the country, including the Panamerican, Santa Rosa, Cocales, Guazacapan, and Taxisco highways. Reports indicate blockades are ongoing along Route CA-9 (km 53) near Sanarate. Dozens to a few hundred people may participate in each gathering. Some of the confirmed protest locations April 25-26 include:
Pan-American Highway (km 154) near Nahuala
Pan-American Highway (km 148) near Santa Lucia Utatlan
Machaquila Bridge near Poptun
El Asintal in Retalhuleu
Cuatro Caminos, between Quetzaltenango and Totonicapan
Officials will likely deploy security personnel to monitor the gatherings. Protests are likely to result in short-term localized ground travel delays, including on alternative road routes. Confrontations between security personnel and protesters are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen affected roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Guatemala.
