Ireland: Truckers to stage multiple vehicle protests in Dublin from April 11
Truckers to stage multiple vehicle protests in Dublin, Ireland, from April 11; heightened security, significant transport disruption likely.
Event
Truckers plan to demonstrate in Dublin April 11 to denounce high fuel prices and demand assistance from the government. Activists will gather in their vehicles at four locations on motorways surrounding Dublin at 03:00 before proceeding in convoy to the city center where they will remain to block traffic; organizers claim they will sustain the protest until their demands are met. There will also be a pedestrian protest outside the General Post Office in the city center from 09:00. The vehicle gathering points are as follows:
M1 - Applegreen Service Station Lusk
M4 - Kinnegad Plaza
M7 - Toughers Truck Stop Naas
M11/M50 Carrickmines Retail Park
Additional police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the action and will likely impose measures such as road closures and movement restrictions to facilitate the demonstrations. The vehicle convoys themselves will almost certainly result in significant ground transport disruptions throughout Dublin for the duration of the protest, including complete gridlock on major routes to and through the city. Organizers have called for activists to remain peaceful; however, isolated clashes cannot be ruled out between police and activists or with frustrated commuters.
Advice
Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and, if possible, avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in Dublin for the duration of the protest. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Do not attempt to pass through any roadblocks.
