Serbia: Protest march led by market vendors ongoing in downtown Belgrade April 13

Market vendors are protesting in downtown Belgrade, Serbia, April 13. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

A protest march led by market stall owners and operators is ongoing in downtown Belgrade on the afternoon of April 13. Participants are denouncing a proposal that would require each market stall to have an electronic cash register, alleging the measure is impractical and unaffordable for many vendors. Protesters are currently gathering outside the Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) building on Takovska Street, which is closed to traffic as a result. Participants intend to later march on the President's Office on Kralja Milana before marching on the Government of Serbia building on Nemanjina. The event will conclude with a rally in Slavija Square around 18:00. Several thousand people are in attendance.

Police have reportedly deployed to monitor and facilitate the protest. Large crowds and related security measures have prompted road closures, traffic diversions, and congestion in downtown Belgrade, particularly in and near the Terazije Tunnel, which protesters earlier marched through; further traffic disruptions are likely. Violence is not anticipated.

Advice

Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area. Seek alternative routes if the disruptions persist. Avoid all protests.
