Warning

Event

Daily anti-government protests are continuing in Colombo as of April 11 over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Demonstrations have occurred outside the parliament building and at Galle Face Green and Independence Square; the actions will probably continue indefinitely. Hundreds to a few thousand people may attend larger gatherings. Planned events for April 11 include:

  • 17:00: Demonstrations at Colombo's Liberty Roundabout and outside St. Anthony's Convent church in the suburb of Borella.

  • 17:30: Protest near St. Theresa's Church in Thimbirigasyaya.

Additional unannounced gatherings are likely, especially near government buildings and residences of politicians.

Enhanced security measures are in place across Colombo. Security personnel typically monitor demonstrations and erect roadblocks and security cordons near sensitive sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially during large gatherings and protest marches. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Security forces have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse previous demonstrations. Protests may quickly turn violent, with activists engaging in arson, vandalism, and attacks on vehicles or property. Officials may impose controls on public movement and telecommunication services in case of significant violence.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Seek alternative routes to circumvent rallies. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
