Officials are tightening security in Rambukkana, Kegalle District, as of April 22, for the funeral of a protestor who died due to police firing April 19. Police and military officers will deploy to the area. Security cordons, checkpoints, road closures, and traffic diversions are likely. Curbs on public movement and internet services are possible. A curfew was active in the area through 05:00 April 21 after violent clashes broke out between police and protestors April 19.

Rambukkana is approximately 27 km (16.8 miles) west of Kandy.

Context

On April 19, activists had blocked the Main line railway tracks in Rambukkana for over 15 hours and burned tires to denounce a fresh fuel price hike amid prevailing shortages. Police action left one protestor dead and 32 people wounded. The incident marked the first time security forces used live ammunition to disperse protesters since anti-government demonstrations over an ongoing economic crisis began in March.
