Sri Lanka: Officials announce extended public holidays nationwide April 11-15; increased security likely during festivities

Banks will remain open April 11-12 but will be closed April 13-15; government offices will effectively close April 11-18. Increased security is likely nationwide across the holidays, especially April 15-17 for Christian observances. Ongoing anti-government protests over poor economic conditions may also escalate during the holidays.

The tightest security measures are likely in Colombo, where the largest anti-government protests are occurring. Heightened security is also probable at worship places hosting large gatherings for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and Christian observances April 15-17. Although officials have not publicized any specific terror threat, security forces are typically on high alert, especially after the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings by an Islamist militant group. Police usually impose roadblocks, security cordons, and personnel and vehicle checks near sensitive sites such as government buildings and religious venues.

Localized transport disruptions and a heavy police presence are likely near any large demonstrations. Protests could turn violent quickly, though security forces are usually quick to resort to the use of force to disperse unruly gatherings. Businesses in areas experiencing violent demonstrations and/or heightened security measures could close temporarily as a precaution.
