Officials have lifted the curfew in Rambukkana, Kegalle District, effective 05:00 April 21. The curfew began late April 19 after violent clashes during protests in the area. Activists had blocked the Main line railway tracks in Rambukkana for over 15 hours and burned tires to denounce a fresh fuel price hike amid prevailing shortages. Police action left one protestor dead and 32 people wounded. The incident marked the first time security forces used live ammunition to disperse protesters since anti-government demonstrations over an ongoing economic crisis began in March.

Additional protests may materialize in the area, especially if the official death toll rises. Officials will likely monitor gatherings and may forcibly disperse disruptive gatherings. Protestors may engage in arson and vandalism and clash with police, prompting further violence. Curfews may recur if significant violence occurs.

Rambukkana is approximately 27 km (16.8 miles) west of Kandy.
