Disruptions, protests, and heightened security are likely nationwide leading up to and immediately following the first round of the May 29 presidential election. If no candidate receives a clear majority in this round, as is likely, a second round will take place June 19.
The national army has deployed over 80,000 troops to protect polling centers from possible acts of violence. The sale and consumption of alcohol will be banned between 18:00 May 28-06:00 May 30. Officials will also close land borders May 29.
Violence is possible, particularly as the government has been carrying out a militarized campaign against the Gulf Cartel (Cartel de Gulfo) criminal organization in recent weeks. The National Liberation Army (Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional, ELN), a leftist insurgency group, unilaterally declared a ceasefire for the election period, though violence between the government and the ELN remains possible. Protests near polling centers and in major cities once electoral results are announced are possible, though are more likely to occur in the runoff June 19.
