Warning

Event

Activists, including members of the Civic Movement La Union (Movimiento Civico La Union), have launched protests in several locations of the San Jose Metropolitan area, also known as the Central Valley, on May 23 to oppose the increase in fuel prices.

Reports indicate there are roadblocks along the road connecting the city of Cartago and Tres Rios. Protests are also likely near the offices of the Costarrican Petroleum Refinery (Refinadora Costarricense de Petroleo, RECOPE) in San Jose, and near City Mall in Alajuela.

Transport disruptions are likely to continue through late May 23. Heightened security is possible near government offices and along major roads; clashes between police and protesters who block main roads cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in the San Jose Metropolitan Area on May 23.
