Honduras: Freight transport workers continue to stage strike, related protests in areas across country as of May 10
Freight transport workers continue strike, related protests across Honduras as of May 10; transport disruptions reported in multiple areas.
Event
Freight transport workers are holding a nationwide strike and associated protests in several parts of Honduras as of May 10. The purpose of the labor stoppage and demonstrations is to denounce companies' alleged noncompliance with minimum pay rates per kilometer traveled, among other issues. Activists initially launched their protests May 9 and have been parking their trucks along several major roads, including Highway 5 (CA-5) in Comayagua, affecting travel to Comayagua International Airport (XPL); protests have also been reported in Colon, Atlantida, and Cortes departments. While the truckers have pledged to not obstruct thoroughfares, their protests have reportedly impeded the flow of traffic and created delays in multiple areas. The strike has also reportedly prompted a notable reduction in cross-border trade.
Transport disruptions are likely to continue in protest-affected areas. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if demonstrators block all lanes on major roads. Supply chain disruptions are possible if the strike and protest actions continue for several days.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Honduras, especially if traveling via interdepartmental roads. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
