A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred in Sistan and Baluchestan Province at 12:06 May 23. The epicenter was about 103 km (64 miles) south of Nosratabad and 106 km (68 km) southwest of Zahedan. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout Sistan and Baluchestan Province and eastern parts of Kerman Province. Some shaking may also have occurred in far western Pakistan and far southwestern Afghanistan. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming hours.
