Informational

Event

Teachers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) are staging a 72-hour strike and related demonstrations throughout Michoacan State May 11-13. The purpose of the actions is to demand that authorities address teachers' demands related to hiring practices, the payment of temporary employees, and other administrative issues.

Related gatherings are likely to result in transport and business disruptions in multiple areas, including the city of Morelia, the economic center of the state. While the demonstrations are likely to be largely peaceful, there will probably be an increased police presence near rally sites. Additionally, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid any strike-related demonstrations as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent protest-related disruptions. Do not attempt to drive through any protester-erected roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential demonstration sites. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
