Authorities are imposing a nationwide curfew in Sri Lanka through at least 07:00 May 12 following widespread clashes between pro-and anti- Rajapaksa supporters; curfew extensions are likely. Initial violence broke out May 9 outside the prime ministerial residence of Temple Trees in Colombo’s Kollupitiya area, followed by the largest anti-government protest camp at Galle Face Green. Ensuing nationwide civil unrest has killed at least eight people and injured over 200 others. Arson, vandalism, lethal clashes, and shootings have occurred, largely targeting politicians of the ruling party, their residences, and supporters. The government has empowered military personnel to open fire at individuals deemed to damage public property or harm others. Authorities prohibit all public movement and gatherings. Residents must stay home unless holding relevant curfew permits such as identity cards of essential workers or police-approved passes. Passengers heading to the airport may use their passports and flight tickets as curfew passes to travel to the airport. The Sri Lankan Tourism Development Board has advised tourists to remain in their accommodation unless traveling to the airport. Trains will not function during the curfew; other services are likely to face similar disruptions.
